Near Eastern Carnelian Zoomorphic Amulet Bead (No Reserve Price)
A fine Near Eastern amulet bead in the shape of a stylised seated animal, possibly a lion. The piece is made from an orange carnelian with slight translucency and slight white inclusions. The amulet is perforated horizontally for suspension.
Near Eastern civilisations utilised a wide array of precious metals and semi-precious stones to create jewellery and amulets which would have been worn throughout life and death. Stones such as agate, carnelian, and turquoise, were valued for their delicate transparency and variety of vibrant colours. Depictions of animal figures were a popular choice, with creatures seen to be powerful or dangerous, such as lions and bulls, selected to represent the power of local deities and rulers.
