Description
This plate originates from: ‘Natuurkundige Beschryving eener uitmuntende verzameling van zeldsaame gedierten, Bestaande in Oost- en Westindische viervoetige dieren, vogelen en slangen.’, by Arnout Vosmaer, Amst., J.B. Elwe, 1804. This work was first published periodically in 33 parts from 1720-1799 titled ‘Description d’un receuil exquis d’animaux rares, consistent en quadrupedes, oiseaux et serpents.’ by Pierre Meijer or G. Warmers (1766-1787). It was finally re-issued complete with 2 additions by Elwe. This work is scarse.
Engraver: Simon Fokke (Amsterdam, 1712 – 1784) was a Dutch engraver, etcher and designer. He was a student of Jan Caspar Philips, and worked mainly in book illustration. After: Aart Schouman (1710-1792) was active in Dordrecht. This multitalented artist made paintings, watercolours and prints.
Author: Arnout Vosmaer (1720-1799), was a Dutch Natural History collector and researcher and conservator of the menagerie of the Stadthouder William V. In 1752 he acquired the famous collection of Albertus Seba which later transferred to to kabinet of William V.
