Katarina Witt - Olympic Winner (1984, 1988)

Autographed, signed photo (13x18 cm) by Katarina Witt. Autograph was part of my father's collection, who started collecting signatures of world leaders, actors, musicians, Olympians and football players in 1961. During 50+ years, he owned ~20.000 autographs in 180 binders and boxes. Katarina Witt (b. 1965) won gold medals in figure skating at the 1984 and 1988 Winter Olympics, the first skater since Sonja Henie to win gold at two consecutive Olympics. (Henie won three times, 1928, 1932, 1936.) A product of the efficient sports training program of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), she won six consecutive European Championships (1983-1988) and four World Championships in 5 years. Even before the GDR's absorption into the Federal German Republic, she began a professional career in the West in 1988, skating on tour with Brian Boitano. She won an Emmy for Carmen on Ice (1989). In 1998, Witt posed nude for Playboy, resulting in the first sold-out edition of the magazine since the first issue featured Marilyn Monroe. Witt has written a novel, Only with Passion (2005), and has had a show on German television since 2006.
