It extends over 80 km in length and 10 km in width. We distinguish Haut-Médoc in the south and Bas-Médoc in the north, which corresponds to the Medoc appellation itself. This AOC covers 5,800 ha and produces 285,000 hl of red wines per year. The Médoc enjoys an exceptional geographical location and a unique subsurface. Graveltails make great wines. The mix of Merlot (the main grape of the AOC), with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec gives the wines charm and balance. The mouth of the Medoc is well structured, full with a framework of tasty tannins. The wines from gravel are strong and powerful. They can be tannic in their youth and are expected to live 5 to 10 years. Those born on clay-limestone soils are fine, elegant and subtle and can be tasted quite young. Haut Médoc: The AOC Haut-Médoc is located south of the Médoc appellation. The Haut-Médoc appellation produces exclusively red wines (220,000 hl/year) on an area of 4,800 ha, including 6 renowned municipal appellations: Margaux, Moulis, Listrac, Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe.
