Brewed in honor of the original navigators of the 19th century, Pirate Ale seemed destined to be aged in rum barrels. The winner of the Belgian classic and unusual gold medal is aged in barrels for the first time since the beginning. At 10.5% ABV, the beer has a large malt profile that produces flavors of country bread and dried fruit. Because of the secondary fermentation in the bottle, Pirate has always been regarded as one of the smoothest strong ales ever brewed. By aging in rum barrels, the beer picks up vanilla notes, which give the beer an eccentric, very pronounced taste, without overpowering the spicy quality that has made Pirate famous.
