Beautiful Kutani Porcelain 九谷焼 Vase - Ceramic, Porcelain - 三代目 徳田八十吉 Tokuda Yasokichi III - Japan - Shōwa period (1926-1989)

DESCRIPTION This is a very beautiful Kutani-yaki (Kutani porcelain) vase. It expresses deep and exquisite colors with exceptional craftsmanship. The third generation, Tokuda Yasokichi III 三代目 徳田八十吉, was born in Ishikawa Prefecture in 1933. His significant characteristic was deviating from traditional Kutani-yaki designs (landscapes, figures, flora, and fauna) and focusing solely on color combinations to finish his pieces. He used around 70 different colors and developed a technique called "saiyuu 彩釉" where he completed his works using only the gradations of colors without traditional painted motifs. In 1993, he was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal, and in 1997, he was designated as a Living National Treasure (Important Intangible Cultural Property Holder). His work, "Radiant Glaze Jar - Ganges 耀彩壷・恒河," was exhibited at the entrance to the Japan Gallery at the British Museum in 2006, and in 2008, he gave a commemorative lecture titled "The Path I Walked" at the Japan "Crafted Beauty" Exhibition in London, organized by the British Museum. He passed away in 2009. His works are held in the collections of institutions such as the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, the British Museum, and the Smithsonian's Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery.
