A very sound bi-folio from a Qur'an originating in North Africa in the C19th. It is written in free flowing Mahgribi script, with open curves and flourishes extending deep into the sub-linear area, occasionally touching the adjacent words. Its verticals and downstrokes are slightly curved to the left giving the script a unique grace. as is often the case with North African script, it is written with a wide and bold pen stroke.
Although we can't identify the exact Chapter this bi-folio comes from the Zaqqum tree, a tree that grows in the depths of hell (the cursed tree). It is mentioned in verses 17:60; 37:62-68, 44:43, and 56:52 of the Quran. There are a number of interpretations of this reference, all being related to sinners.
This is an interesting folio representing the calligraphic developments that took place in North Africa, or the Maghrib, comprising Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. Art of the Maghrib is distinguished by a mystical quality drawing on the region’s symbols and signs that originate in pre-Islamic Berber motifs and a rich Islamic heritage introduced to the region by Arabs in the seventh century.
