Wines bought to a retired wine distributor of Haro, La Rioja, in 2017. Stored in private cellar up to today. Bottle in outstanding condition: very good filling level, cork, color, capsule, label, no leakage. Fully mature and therefore drinking well now, or cellar for next 20-25 years. Vintage 1964 was officially rated "Excellent" by the Regulatory Board of Rioja. This vintage was unanimously considered the best vintage of the 20th century. 98/100 Wine Spectator: "A gorgeous wine, with violet and other floral aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and firmly tannic, yet harmonious and long. A truly great wine, like layered silk". 19/20 Jancis Robinson: "We tasted two bottles of this delicious wine, of which the first was slightly more vibrant than the second. (Plus ça change...) This wine was made exclusively from Tempranillo apparently, perhaps because the Cabernet did not perform especially well that year, suggested José Luis, and certainly it tasted very much more ‘Spanish’ than the 1945. Very, very sweet and velvety-tetxured without the lean sinewy character of the 1945. Super-flattering and ripe - rather more California in style than Bordeaux – really sweet and rich. This was Luis’s grandfather’s last great vintage. He died in 1966. Yields were relatively high then and Luis noted that viticultural techniques would have been quite different from those employed in 1945. Agrochemicals were being used with some delight then presumably.
