Gabriel Cornelius Von Max (1840–1915) - Junges Mädchen in Schwarz

Gabriel Cornelius Ritter von Max (Prag 1840–1915 München) "Junges Mädchen in Schwarz" signed: "G Max" oil on canvas 48 x 39 cm (without the including frame) For sale is this painting by Gabriel von Max in good original condition including an antique frame. I acquired the artwork in 2023 from the Detroit based Auction House DuMouchelles and offered it at the "Gemälde des 19 Jahrhunders" auction on the 25.04.2024 at the Dorotheum. It was presented with an estimate of 3000 to 5000 Euro but remained unsold. This portrait is related to the another artwork by Max, the painting "Margarethe" (Dorotheum, 7 June 2021 Lot. Nr 556). The person depicted, the clothes worn and the setting itself appears to be identical. Fascinating in the comparison of the two works is how a contrary image expression was achieved exclusively by slightly changing the facial expressions and the way the hair is worn. (Relevant documents are of course included.) provenance: Auktion, Wolf's Gallery, Cleveland, Ohio, 3 May 1993, Los 136; Sammlung Richard Leon Zielinsky (1935-2023), Center Line, Michigan; Auktion, DuMouchelles, Detroit, Michigan, 20. Oktober 2023, Los 110 ; Dorotheum, Gemälde des 19Jh, 25.04.2024, Lot Nr. 639 (I offer secure packaging and worldwide shipping.)
