Crafted with the traditional use of Gofun (crushed oyster shell white pigment), this mask exemplifies the artisanal skill and cultural depth of its creator, Shuun, real name Fukui. Despite being lesser-known due to his rural residence in Tenri, Shuun’s works have been sought after by Noh schools and connoisseurs, often gifted among the financial elite of Tenri. The "Ko-omote" mask portrays the purity and naive beauty of an unmarried young woman through traditional makeup styles, including high painted eyebrows and teeth blackening (Ohaguro), complemented by the white of Gofun. This traditional material enhances the mask’s ethereal whiteness and beauty, with subtle hints of rouge to suggest health and vitality. The condition of the mask is good, with some wear and patina consistent with age. The back of the mask carries the signature of the maker, adding authenticity and cultural value.
