Kendi - Porcelain - Celadon - Japan - Edo Period (1600-1868)

A rare Japanese Arita kiln bulbous shaped kendi in unusual sea green celadon glaze dating from the last quarter of the 17th century. The kendi is subtly decorated with molded ribs along the body, reminiscent of the Chinese ‘HUNDRED RIB’ celadon glazed wares from the Yuan dynasty. Kendi's like this one where mainly produced for the South-East Asian market, especially Indonesia where Kendi's where used in every day life, but also for purification rituals. The Kendi shape probably derives from the Indian ritual ewer Kundika, brought by Indian monks to South-East Asia.
