Oliver Goldsmith - A History of The Earth and Animated Nature - 1880

A History of The Earth and Animated Nature, by Oliver Goldsmith, With an Introductory View of the Animal Kingdom by Baron Cuvier; Copious Notes of Discoveries in Natural History, And a Life of the Author by Washington Irving. Published by A. Fullarton and Co. / M’Gready, Thomson & Niven, undated but c.1885. In two volumes, complete with 73 full-page colour illustrations and 2 title page illustrations, also in colour. Vol. I: [lvi], 536 pp, black and white portrait frontispiece; Vol. II: 541 pp., with a full list of plates and index at the end of the book. Half-leather binding to red cloth covers, spine with five raised bands, gilt decoration and red and black labels with gilt titles, marbled page edges. Bound by J. Ferguson of Glasgow. The leather has very light scuffing and wear but presents very nicely. The cloth covers are partially sunned/faded with some staining. Text pages have some occasional handling marks and here and there a little offsetting from plates, but are for the most part very clean and bright, and the colour plates are in fine condition. The bindings are tight and firm. No loose pages, no inscriptions or bookplates. Both volumes have two title pages, one giving the publisher as A. Fullarton, London & Edinburgh, the other stating M’Gready, Thomson & Niven as publisher. Fullarton were the original publishers of this version of Goldsmith’s work dating back to the 1850s, and this edition was published for Fullarton by M’Gready, Thomson & Niven at a later date sometime between 1875 and 1885. Overall a very good/near fine complete copy of this classic work. Size: 25.5 x 18 cm Weight: 3 kg See the photos for a better idea of details and condition
