Hendrik Cornelis Kranenburg is mentioned in the great 'Scheen Lexicon'. The painting shows ships with high chimneys characteristic of steam navigation and a sailing inland waterway. This, combined with the fact that Kranenburg lived and worked in Amsterdam until 1943 and the type of walk cranes visible in the background, suggest that this painting was created in Amsterdam before 1940.
