A very beautiful and RARE set..... " Egypt: Descriptive, Historical, and Picturesque. Translated from the Original German By Clara Bell. With an Introduction and Notes By S. Birch". Bound in original dark brown cloth heavily decorated in black and gilt, illustrated with numerous wood engravings, all page edges gilt; text blocks square and tight, pages clean and unmarked internally near fine!!!!! All covers rubbed at edges and corners, especially front inner joints a bit cracking, spine with shelfwear, light losses at head and tail of spine, a bit darkened.-see photos as part of description. George Ebers [1837-1898] was a German Egyptologist and Professor at Leipzig University. He is famous for discovering a rare Egyptian papyri of herbal medicine in Thebes that dates to 1550 B.C. Known as the Ebers Papyrus,it is one of the most well preserved of its kind. In addition to his archaeological writing, Ebers penned historical fiction, using his knowledge of Egypt as a setting, romanticizing its myths and legends that helped to popularize the work of early Egyptologists. Ex library copy with only signs: numbers on spine, sticker on front pastedown, stamp on title page, a tiny red number "72" on upper margin of one page of each volume, no other markings.
