The Glen Grant Distillery is located in Rothes, in the Speyside region of Scotland. It was founded in 1840 by brothers John and James Grant, two former illegal distillers and bootleggers who decided to obtain a license to allow distilling. By 1872 the founders of the Glen Grant Distillery had passed away. The young James "The Major" Grant, born in 1847, was always very interested in the distillery and having inherited the company and the title of "Glengrant" from his uncle John Grant, he proved to be a worthy successor. He was a legendary innovator, socializer and traveler, who lived by his own rules and set his own standards. New ideas fascinated him and he was not afraid to explore them. He was the first Highland man to own a car. Glen Grant was then the first distillery to have an electric light and introduced the tall, slender stills and purifiers that created the fresh malt flavor and light color that define Glen Grant whiskey to this day.
