Published by John Cassell 10 x 6.75 inches. xliv + 556 pp. Main text within double borders. Bound in original blue cloth, gilt, decorated with gilt blocks and blind stamping on boards .Illustrated by 10 folding plates, including panoramic frontispiece and by wood engravings throughout. The first volume of a periodical describing and illustrating the buildings and exhibits of the Great Exhibition 1851. It is copiously illustrated with wood engravings, including folding views of the interior and exterior of the building with a splendid frontispiece panorama. At the beginning is a directory of officials and the Official List of Awards Granted by the Juries. Regular features in the text include the building itself, machinery, including locomotives, industrial and agricultural, and sculpture and the plastic arts with the numerous nude statues in classical poses so beloved of the Victorians. Other recurring articles. show the products of various nations, while special features emphasise for example, Irish Limerick lace and the products of Sheffield industry. Condition: Please see photographs as part of the condition. Boards and spine presenting signs of shelfwear. Back board discoloured as shown in the photographs. Foxing in content but appears complete and overall in good condition.
