What unites them is a passion for wine – a passion which respects traditions but does not shy away from embarking on new paths whenever its unbridled creative drive sounds the call. Dirk is the current leader of the family – a role passed down to him by his father, with the challenge to “innovate while preserving good traditions”. More than up for the challenge, this fifth-generation member of Niepoort is intensely curious by nature: he carefully observes everything that happens around him, and when he glimpses a unique opportunity, he jumps into action without hesitation. Dirk's children Daniel, Marco and Ana are following in their father's footsteps to ensure that the next few chapters of Niepoort's history continue to be as fruitful as each harvest. WINEMAKER: Dirk Niepoort. AWARDS/RECOMMENDATIONS 92 Points, CellarTracker (1994 Vintage) 88 Points, Wine Spectator (1994 Vintage) 17 Points, Jancis Robinson (2018 Vintage) 17 Points, Vinum Wine Magazine (2018 Vintage) 93-94 Points, VertdeVin (2019 Vintage) 17.5 Points, Vinho Grandes Escolhas (2016 Vintage) 17 Points, Revista de Vinhos (2011 Vintage) 92 Points, Falstaff (2009 Vintage) 91 Points, Cellar Selection (2005 Vintage) WINE VARIETIES: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz & others. VINIFICATION It was created from low-yielding old vines in the Cima Corgo region of Douro Valley. The grapes were trodden in "lagares" and later the Port was matured in large wooden vats and also in barrels at our Lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia. The Niepoort LBV are traditionally bottled 4 years after the harvest. Accordind to Dirk Niepoort, it is best "to bottle it as soon as we can in order to reveal the fruit and freshness of the LBV in the moment of the tasting". 1994 TASTING NOTES Concentrated aromas of ripe dark fruits, damsons and hints of black pepper. Intense on the palate and full bodied with a long rich after-taste. 2018 TASTING NOTES Violet glints appear in this wine’s intense ruby red hue. The nose reveals aromas of fruits of the forest, spices and figs. On the palate, you will find Niepoort’s quintessential structure and elegance. It sets off on sweet notes but finishes dry, with a surprisingly assertive acidity. This Late Bottled Vintage is one of the few wines in its category that is bottled with a real cork instead of a bar top closure. At Niepoort, this means that this Port can already be enjoyed in its youth or left to mature in the bottle for many years. SERVING The perfect partner for chocolate desserts, especially if dark chocolate is used. It will also pair beautifully with Cheddar, Gouda and Brie cheese as well as aromatic red meat dishes, venison, lamb, veal or pepper steak.
