A fascinating and beautifully illustrated copy of Japan and the Japanese people, discussing the society and culture of the country. It comprises a set of sketches of Japanese life which are divided up into different categories - My Japanese House, Picturesque People, Gardens, Domain of the Goddess, Yotsuya Dwellers, Within the Shops, Tombs of Tokyo, Vendors, Favourite Food, Temples, and On Tokyo Streets. Illustrated by Hiroshi Yoshida, Beisai Kubota and Shoshun Otake. Each section of the book starts with a full page black and white drawing and there is also a small illustrated chapter header, and other drawings in text. The frontispiece is colour and on glossy paper and is a plate of the ‘Wisteria Arbor at Kameido Shrine in Tokyo’. Published by The Sanseido Co., Ltd, Tokyo, Osaka, 1933. Publisher’s original Lovely colour illustrated beige cloth hardboards with blue title lettering to the front and spine. Illustrated endpapers pages. Book Dimensions: 22.5 x 15.5 cm and Number of Pages: 284 Condition Firm and well bound copy. Light wear to boards’ corners, and minor rubbing to head and foot of spine. Internally the book in good condition. Old inscriptions dated 1937 on half title page. Light faded marks across the top edge of pages throughout. All pages are tightly held at the gutter. Inner hinges are very good. The text is clean, and all illustration are present and in nice condition (Please see pictures).
