Fine opium pipe with silver saddle and silver decorated damper. The 14 cm. long saddle is finely chased in silver, depicting a dragons head, bamboo, a chinese character and a boy playing his flute on the back of a water buffalo. It is made of quality export silver, no hallmarks.
The Pipe bowl/damper has a finely engraved and cut decoration of bamboo and peonies. The silver is in excellent condition, the pottery insert is repaired. The pipe stem is made of bamboo with a finely made faux tortoise (celluloid, there is no seam) cover, and silver rims at both ends. The mouthpiece and end cap are missing. This pipe needs a bit of work but it is a fine example of Chinese opium pipes. - China, ca. 1900
Excellent condition. The pipe is 57.5 cm. long, the saddle is 14 cm. long and the bowl is 7.5 cm. in diameter.
