Batik of Eric Suriyasena - Sri Lanka - circa 1970 (93 cm)

Very large and in near mint condition, a batik painting by Eric Suriyasena. The canvas is a unique piece and made around 1970. His art studio on Sri Lanka had existed for about 6 years at that time. He nowadays is praised as the greatest batik artist around. Many people are working on unique pieces in his current studio, while in 1970 he was mainly working on his paintings by himself. In 2011 he opened a new exposition building in Colombo to exhibit his paintings in. He nowadays frequently produces material for Bollywood, where his fabrics are used for the Indian film industry. Also, each year there is a 'fashion show' starring his fabrics. The painting depicts a farmer on the road in the evening hours with his (water) buffalo and hay cart. Mainly composed of tones of the earth: ochre, roasted sienna, light yellow, yellow and brown. The painting is set on a black background so that the colours are pulled to the foreground. I stretched the canvas on an underground for the photos. The fabric is first partly painted in wax in the batik technique. The treated/waxed parts will resist any applied paint. After painting, the wax is removed. Advanced batik consists of various colouring phases whereby between the paint baths the wax is (partly) removed or reapplied. When you see the detailed photos you can imagine how much work one single painting costs. The image measures 93 cm in width by 76 cm in height. It will be carefully rolled in a tubular case prior to shipment. Including the black frame it measures 100 cm wide by 83 cm high. It was placed in a frame, which is why the canvas is still in mint condition. Pick-up is possible in Nispen (near Roosendaal, the Netherlands). Shipment via GLS to neighbouring European countries. Otherwise via PostNL; naturally well-packaged for both options, with registered shipping traceable via track and trace.
