Hefty Dayak ' tandenkeris ' keris, kris – Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia 1920 – 1940.
This hefty Dayak keris is popularly known as the ' tooth keris '. It comes from Kalimantan, Borneo in Indonesia and is characteristic of the Dayak people who populate the interior of Borneo. The Dayak people colonized the Indonesian archipelago from the Philippines around 2000 BC. Dayaks were notorious and feared headhunters. Until about a hundred years ago it was quite normal to chop off the heads of enemies and stick them on a pole as hunting trophies and as talismans to protect the harvest.
This Dayak keris is a smaller version of the Dayak Mandau (headhunters sword). The grip of this keris is in itself an enigmatic piece. It is formed of bone in the shape of the beak of a bird of prey. Above the bone beak is a tuft of goat hair in cream and brown shades. Both the Wilah (barge) and the Gandar (sheath) of the keris are wood decorated with cured and braided rattan. All the keris is painted with typical Dayak figures like berinjan, circles and anthropomorphic figures.
The decoration of Gandar (sheath) and Wilah (barge) are completed by 15 teeth of wild boar and monkeys. The Gandar (sheath) boasts two tufts of goat hair. The end of the Gandar (sheath) is once again trimmed with four tufts of goat hair.
The Wilah (blade) is as large as the rest of the keris, namely 30 cm and is forged with a particularly pamor.
A special keris with a rich history.
