Old Arabic dagger/knife, Jambiya Khanjar - Yemen - mid 20th century
The jambiya (Yambia) is an Arabian dagger which is worn by men from Yemen. This has a short, slightly curved blade and, as can be clearly seen, is worn on the belt. Most men from Yemen wear one of these starting from their fourteenth birthday.
Because the jambiya is worn for more decorative purposes than as a weapon, they are often richly decorated. The decoration on the grip is a strong status symbol for the wearer. Jambiyas are also used in traditional dances, when the dancers hold the dagger in their hand. This takes place during weddings, for example.
