The painter Marinus Bies (1894-1975) lived and worked in Aarle-Rixtel and the surroundings. He was a student of A.M.Gorter and Herman Moerkerk and otherwise formed himself. Since 1933 he became a professional painter.
He painted and drew Brabant landscapes, especially Peel landscapes. He was inspired by the Belgian expressive painters like Constant Permeke.
He was called an atmospheric painter. He taught his son H.Th. Bies.
