Johann Nepomuk Schretteger was born in Reichertshofen in 1764. In 1797 he married the daughter of Andreas Vogler, a famous maker of sundials in Augsburg. Schretteger was the last of the Augsburg counters and solar clocks; in addition to many octagonal sundials, he created several others in square form. Today, many of its dials can be seen in European museums in Budapest, Copenhagen, London, Stockholm; others are in Moscow and New York. Schretteger died in Augsburg in 1843.
