You are looking at a very unique, rare and museum collector's item; an almost 100 year old mummified fetus of a calf in exceptionally good condition; very nicely kept dry and very clean. Absolutely odourless! A real eye-catcher for your interior.
At first sight a somewhat scary, alien oddity. If you look better then you see a fascinating cute snapshot of the development of a calf in the womb of the cow. Everything is already on it; you recognize skeletal structure, eyes, ears, nose, feet, hooves, tail and even the organs you can hear rattling inside the body.
In the case of diseases or abnormalities, a fruit usually dies and abortion or dissolution occurs. However, in a rare case, mummification of the fetus occurs (usually between 90 and 180 days of gestation). The amniotic fluid is then absorbed by the uterus, so that the fruit dries sterile in the cow and transforms into a kind of crumpled, dried leather handbag. Calcification causes the fruit to become hard, as it were. That is why this phenomenon is also called stone fruit or fossilized calf.
A cow with such a stone fruit often looks normal and healthy but can no longer become pregnant.
