Description

Very nicely carved small netsuke, depicting Ju-rô-jin, god of longevity amongst the seven gods of good fortune (Shichi-fuku-jin), leaning on his deer, symbol of longevity.

He holds in his right hand a fan, one of his traditional attributes, and wears his characteristic cap, believed to be transparent and fringed with the symbol of the solar disk (see picture from Ko-Ji Hô-Ten volume 1 page 361).

The netsuke is very nicely executed, nice to see from any side, with vivid expressions for Ju-rô-jin (long beard and benevolent smile), and the deer.

Notice the way the deer antlers are resting on the god’s cap.

Signed Tomo-Chika on the under side, close to the larger hole of the asymmetric himotoshi.
