The tip of this wood pyramid shape would be inserted into the victim's anus or vagina, or placed just below their scrotum. A metal band around the neck would be used to hoist the victim, so they would be suspended just above device. An executioner would then be able to adjust the pressure inflicted on the victim by raising or lowering them, causing the victim's own weight to work against them, and inflicting tremendous pain.
The Italian name for this instrument of torture was 'Culla di Guida', its German name was 'Judaswiege', but the French knew it as 'La Veille': 'the wake' or 'nightwatch'.
