This is a mandau/parang ilang from the North West Malaysian part of Borneo. Based on the hilt it seems to be of Murut origin, with an influence of Kayanic motifs on the scabbard. The characteristic convex/concave blade is 50 cm long and of quality steel. It has JAHRI stamped on it, together with protrusions at the tip of the blade. The well carved hard wood scabbard has three metal decorations (one lost), probably made of rifle bullets, combined with 3D aso motifs. The hilt is decorated with both blond goat hair and a long tuft of human hair. My feeling is that this parang was made for local and real use.
