The Sahara is the home of the Tuareg. Camels are the preferred mode of transportation for them. When they move their tents, they use some sort of sedan chair, a palanquin, which they place on the camel. A palanquin consists of 4 wooden sticks ‘ame ssaqqab‘, which is connected with cross slats, strung together with goat leather or camel leather. In this palanquin sits the lady of the house with the smaller children and lambs.
The palanquin has a second function. Inside the tent it is put upside down and used as a tabel or platform to store food and personal items. De four sticks of every palanquin are engraved with beautiful geometric motifs.
These are old carrier sticks from the Tuareg people of Mauritania and Niger. Bought in situ on one of our many travels in Northern Africa.
The Tuareg are proud nomadic people of the Sahara region. They are famous for their beautiful jewelry, leatherwork and woodwork. Because the Tuareg are nomadic, they are limited in their possessions – for this reason everything that they own is not only beautiful and highly decorative, but also functional.
