【Product details】
This exquisite lidded container is a masterful example of Kaga Makie artistry, originating from the flamboyant and grandiose art of the Momoyama period. Created by the esteemed Ikeda Kiichi, a disciple of the traditional Kaga Makie master Inami Kirokusai, this piece is a testament to centuries of refined craftsmanship nurtured under the Kaga domain's patronage.
The container features a lavish peony design, a symbol of prosperity, nobility, and honor in Japanese culture. Kiichi's work is not merely a replication of classical Kaga Makie but a fusion of foundational techniques with a modern sensibility, resulting in vibrant contemporary pieces brimming with life.
Kiichi's talents were recognized early on, with his work "Seiryu no Zu Byobu" (Clear Stream Picture Screen) receiving high acclaim at the 1950 Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) for its innovative layout and the profound use of traditional lacquer techniques, earning the unanimous special selection by the judges.
With a distinguished exhibition history including multiple selections and special prizes at prestigious shows from 1949 through the late 20th century, Kiichi's works are celebrated for their aesthetic excellence and innovative spirit.
The piece is presented in excellent condition, featuring a Nashiji, or pear skin ground, a technique that creates a textured, speckled effect, enhancing the visual depth and allure of this remarkable piece. This lidded container, complete with its original wooden box, is a collector's dream, embodying the pinnacle of Japanese lacquer art.
