This is a fossil ammonite of the species Perisphinctes, partially uncovered from the surrounding sect nodule. It comes from the Betsiboka region of Madagascar. Septarian nodules are concretions of hard, compact rock that often form around decaying organic material. In the case of sectarian nodules, these concretions formed around the remains of decaying marine life in a marine environment. The cracks within the concretions are filled with minerals such as calcite (yellow) and aragonite (brown), sometimes accompanied by pyrite. These mineral deposits create fascinating and visually appealing patterns often referred to as “dragon balls.” Septarian nodules are often found as geodes with cavities filled with calcite crystals. In rarer cases, the fossils that originally triggered the formation of the concretion are still preserved within the sect nodule. This fossil ammonite, embedded in the septarian nodules, offers a unique insight into ancient sea life, preserved in astonishing detail.
