Onkyo - CP-1028R Tocadiscos

An incredibly cool early (4-bit!) computer controlled, programmable turntable from Onkyo. It features an optical eye in the tonearm that scans the empty areas between the turntable tracks to figure out just where to exactly start. This obviously does not always work, which happens to all these optical-scanning turntables. It fails when records are not black, when there's a lot of light interfering, when gaps are not easily detectable, etc... BUT when it does it's a really cool feature! If it doesn't work, you can operate the turntable manually. It always features auto-stop. Using the really cool, retro fluorescent screen, you can program a sequence of songs you want to hear. You can also put a song on repeat. The tonearm is operated by its own motor. I have replaced the cogwheel this mechanism depends on which was worn out, re-lubed the mechanism with high quality precision grease and this part works flawlessly. The stylus on the cartridge is still in good shape. There's only one type that fits on the provided optical headshell. But if you want to use others, you can change the headshell and operate the unit manually. This unit actually sounds great. It's got a very quiet, direct drive motor, and the cartridge sounds excellent. Shock absorbing feat, cardan suspension on the lightweight tonearm: this machine was built during the golden era of turntables, and it shows. The dust cover is clear, has not yellowed, and features no (0) cracks. Only very superficial cleaning traces. I got third-party, 3D printed hinges because the original ones had cracked. Unfortunately, the fit is not perfect, so the dust cover doesn't completely close in the rear. It sits above 2mm above the surface at the back, yet closes fully on the front. You don't see this from the front (see pictures). I will add the original, broken hinges so you can maybe source some real spares one day.
