Hashiguchi Goyo (memo)
1880 Born in Kagoshima City.
1899 He moved to Tokyo and first became a student of Hashimoto Hashimotogahou(橋本雅邦) , but the following year, he was admitted to Tokyo Art School’s Western Painting Department (currently Tokyo University of the Arts) at the recommendation of his relative, Kuroda Kiyoki(黒田清輝) .
He has produced many books for books such as Natsume Soseki’s(夏目漱石) book “I am a cat” and received high praise.
In the Taisho period, I began full-scale research on Ukiyo-e, which I was interested in as a student。
Goyo, who left many masterpieces in beautiful paintings, was nicknamed “Utamaro of the Taisho period.”
He died in 1921 at the age of 41. There are only 14 prints left, including the Watanabe version.
First edition 1920.
This is a later edition, printed using the original woodblocks.
This was made in ca. 2000-present.
