This is an inkstone box depicting Tang children in raden craftsmanship by the Takaoka lacquerware artist, Kiyoshi Yamada 山田清志. Despite its simple design, the exquisite color scheme of the Tang children and the luster of the raden highlight its luxuriousness. It is in excellent condition. I believe those who appreciate Japanese art will surely be pleased with it. Takaoka Lacquerware: Takaoka lacquerware originated when Maeda Toshinaga, the feudal lord of the Kaga Domain, built Takaoka Castle in present-day Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, at the beginning of the Edo period, and began producing everyday items such as armor, chests of drawers, and tableware. Tang Children: "Tang children" refers to a Japanese art term that depicts children playing with Chinese-style hairstyles and clothing.
