Victor Eeckhout (1821-1879) - Portrait of woman 'Sentosa Cookham' and dog

A fine medium sized portrait of a woman and her dog by Belgian artist Victor Eeckhout, in oils on a wooden panel. Provenance to the rear of the panel (image 1j). Victo Eeckhout (1821–1879) was an accomplished Belgian artist who was active in the late 19th Century. He trained under his father, Jacob Joseph Eeckhout, who was a prestigious artist and director of the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. He moved to Brussels in 1848, where this work is most likely painted, and was a founding member of the Belgian Royal Company of Watercolors. He spent two years in Paris 1865/6, exhibiting at the Paris Salon, before moving to Tangier in Morocco. His period in Morocco was highly productive and forged for him the reputation as an Orientalist. He died in Tangier in 1879. His orientalist works are sought after and fetch good prices at auction. There is some slight damage to the panel margins lower right (images 1f and 1g) and a slight crack in the panel (not structural and not unusual in panel paintings) best seen in 1i. Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to prepare the article, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the postal delivery agent for processing. Also, please consider when bidding on this lot that this artwork is shipped from the UK. Import duties will now have to be paid by the recipient to the Postal Service when the parcel arrives in your country. This will likely vary between 5% and 20% of the sale price depending on your country's Import Rate, so please check this if you are concerned. This is a Tax collected on behalf of your Government and is not an additional fee charged by us.
