Originating from the Meiji period, these two volumes are an exquisite representation of the Ukiyo-e tradition, specifically focusing on the erotic Shunga genre. Shigenobu, renowned for his intricate woodblock prints and contributions to illustrated novels, brings to life the intimate encounters between courtesans and their patrons with vivid detail and artistic finesse. Yanagawa Shigenobu, born in Edo and residing in Honjo Yanagawa town, mastered the art of “reading book illustrations” under Hokusai, marrying the master's eldest daughter and further solidifying his place in the Ukiyo-e world. Although his marriage to Omiyo eventually ended, Shigenobu's legacy through his Nishiki-e (brocade prints) and illustrated novels, as well as his rare beauty paintings, continues to captivate collectors and art aficionados. The collection features the traditional Japanese binding, preserving the authenticity and cultural integrity of the era. Despite showing signs of wear typical for its age, such as slight stains and fraying of the closing strings, the books maintain their historical value and aesthetic appeal.
