Headrests from the Horn of Africa were highly personal objects used daily. Today, they survive only in a few isolated regions of the continent, particularly in the area where the four borders of Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, and South Sudan meet.
This exquisite headrest originates from the Arsi Oromo ethnic group. The delicately curved lintel mirrors the ovoid base, supported by five elegantly carved feet resembling a candle holder. Carved from a single piece of hardwood, over time and use, it has acquired a marvelous patina ranging from honey tones to nearly black-brown.
