This is a very unusual napkin and a design I have only had once before.
My belief is that the napkin goes back to the end of the 19th Century.
They are also unusually large at 80cm width, but what is exceptionally
are the Roman initials N.M. They are hand embroidered in single red cross stitch.
What is also unusual are the 2 small letters r.b. and I have no idea what this means.
The damask design is a variation on the chess board design called "Damien" in French.
You will see that each napkin's initials are slightly differently "placed " on the damask, and
this makes them more individual.
