As always, the models come first in Karsten's work. He presents them with respect, even affection, showing each one (or couple) in a different way. Many of the models provide brief blurbs about the experience of being photographed - they make it clear that, although Karsten captures the image, they do at least as much in presenting image that they want seen. For some, that includes a delicate, feminine bit of adornment. Others emphasize tattoos or piercings, many of which would never be seen when the model was clothed. Yet others make play, or sensuality, or the simple fact of their unique presence into the portrait's basic statement. Some sought Karsten out, already familiar with his work, trusting that he would record their innate beauty. Unfortunately, some expected their beauty to fade as they mature, so wanted their youth captured. I hope they learn age by itself does not strip a woman of her appeal, it just changes the kind of appeal she brings with her. This continues Karsten's explorations of color photography, even though a few B&W images remain. Unlike Colors of Sex , where eye-popping primaries came to the fore, color takes a less central role. As with anyone learning new skills, Karsten seemed to go a bit overboard early on. Although his colors remain crisp and bright, they support the woman's image rather than distracting from it. Karsten never denies a woman's (or couple's) erotic potential - this certainly is not a collection for anyone shy about genital details, or turned off by intimate piercings. Still, this lacks some of the head-on intensity of Karsten's other work, such as Days of Intimacy . Here, sexuality remains largely latent, just one of the many facets of the model's person and personality. This is not a criticism. It's just a different mood and, as always, Karsten carries it off perfectly.
