Born on December 13, 1923, in Barcelona, Spain, Tàpies developed an interest in art in his early years. He studied law at the University of Barcelona, but later dropped out to pursue his passion for painting, sculpture and drawing. Tàpies' artistic style was heavily influenced by his early childhood experiences during the Spanish Civil War. His family suffered greatly under the Franco regime and the scars of war are reflected in his art.
