Extremely rare fossil snail (Campanile lachesis) on matrix from Bulgaria. Excellent condition and preservation. This specimen was found complete with the tip. It belongs to the Tertiary (ca. 40-45 million years old) from the Kraymorie formation on the coast of the Black Sea in Bourgas (Bulgaria). While in excellent condition, it's length reaches approx. 0.5 meters, ranking it as one of the largest representatives of this genus ever found. Large fossils of this genus are extremely rare, as the Kraymorie formation is the only known source in the world for specimens of this caliber. This makes Campanile lachesis highly valuable for the fossil record, and several renowned museums around the world have already taken possession of such specimens from our dealership. This fossil is worthy of the best museum or private collections. Gastropods which are commonly referred to as snails have been around since the Late Cambrian period. The class Gastropoda contains a vast total of named species, second only to the insects in overall number.
