This fall is unique in the history of meteorites, given the 70 tonnes which would have survived its fiery passage through the earth's atmosphere On February 12, 1947 around 10:30 a.m., witnesses from the Sikhote-Aline mountain range in the USSR observed a body brighter than the Sun coming from the north and descending at an angle of 41°. Entering the atmosphere at a speed of 14 km/s, the meteorite began to disintegrate. At a height of 5.6 km, the largest mass seemed to explode violently. The sharp flash and deafening shock of the fall were observable within a radius of 300 km around the point of impact. A trail of smoke, with an estimated length of 32 km, remained in the sky for several hours
