(*) This countermark dates from the period of February 1573 until the end of 1574, according to the “Plakkaat der Staten van Holland van 7 februari 1573”, depicting a “Hollandse leeuw in een gepareld ovaal” (Dutch lion in pearled oval), intended for local and foreign currencies with a value higher than 3½ stuivers, with the monetary effect to increase the value of the coins in question with a value of approximately 15%. This surplus value had to be paid on the spot and was used to pay the Dutch soldiers that fought against the Spanish troups. The government intended to pay back the 15% at a later date, but that never happened.
