Byôbu 屏風 (biombo) - Pan de plata, Madera lacada, Seda - Japón - Periodo Edo (1600-1868)

A charming, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with a painting in black ink (sumi) on a backdrop of deeply oxidized silver leaf. The artwork portrays a tiger 虎 (tora) set within a bamboo grove 竹 (take). Captured in a moment of anticipation, the tiger rests its front paws on a large, slanting bamboo tree, with its tail elegantly raised, as it gazes intently into the distance. Silver leaf continuously undergoes the process of oxidation, which creates a beautiful aged patina. Sealed twice in the lower left corner. Mounted by two silk borders, a thin dark green brocade one, and a broad light ecru one with red tones. Framed by black lacquered wood with protective metal hardware. The protective frame was expertly refurbished at a later (more recent) date in Japan. A highly skilled craftsmanship that requires a lot of expertise and knowledge. Features black lacquer and protective hardware with floral decors. Period: Japan – painting from the Edo period (1600-1868), Dimensions: Total width: 359 cm (2 x 61.1 cm, 4 x 59.2 cm ); Height: 173.4 cm. Considering its age in a good restored condition with signs of wear conform age. Please look at the larger restoration on the left panel, and a chip from the wood in upper left corner. For a clear condition reference, please have a close look at the pictures as well as a reference. The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
