A striking, tall two-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) by Ôki Toyohira 大木豊平 (1899-1980) showcasing a depiction of a formidable green shishi 獅子 (temple lion). The creature stands on all fours, exuding a fierce expression as it hisses towards something unseen behind it, with its voluminous orange tail raised in anticipation. Signed and sealed in the lower right corner: 'Made by Toyohira’ 豊平作; ‘Seal of Ki Toyohira’ 木豊平印. Colour and ink on paper. Protected by a wooden frame. Ôki Toyohira 大木豊平 (1899-1980), a Japanese painter hailing from Chiba Prefecture, underwent training under Tsutaya Ryuko 蔦谷龍岬 and Shimada Bokusen 島田墨仙. His artistic contributions extended to roles such as commissioner, member of the jury for Japanese-style painters, and membership in the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. Notably, in 1931, his piece 'Celebration Shokou' received a special prize at the Teiten (Imperial Exhibition), garnering significant acclaim for his skill. Specializing in portraits and landscapes, Ôki showcased his talent early on, being selected for the Teiten at the age of 20 in 1919. In 1932, he again received a special prize at the Teiten, solidifying his place in the artistic realm. Adopting the pseudonym "Toyohira" in 1859, Ôki became a painter associated with the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. Period: Japan - Shôwa period (1926-1989).
