Amazing lacquered wooden clothing rack 衣桁 (ikô), used for official displaying kimono. The body of the rectangular detachable frame decorated with a repetitive design of crests 紋 (mon) depicting two crossed feathers in a circle 丸に違鷹羽紋 (maru ni chigai takanoha mon). Rendered in golden hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) on a black lacquer substrate. The rack is fitted with partially gilt metal hardware, intricately engraved with traditional scrolling foliage 唐草 (karakusa) motifs surrounding the en-suite feather crest. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912). Dimensions: Height 160.9 cm, Width 190.8 cm, Depth 41.7 cm. Considering its age in a reasonable condition with old restorations and wear conform age. Please have a close look at the photos of the lower beam. Standing slightly askew. For a clear condition reference, please view the pictures as well. An ikô is a piece of interior furnishing documented to be used in Japan as early as the twelfth century. By the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries, lacquer clothing stands had become a conventional item included in the bridal trousseau of wealthy women. The kimono shown in the picture is included in this lot. This stand will be shipped in individual parts and is easy to put together.
