A large, and lovely lacquered rectangular sutra box 経箱 (kyôbako) with lobed corners and straight sides. Raised by four connected ‘butterfly’-feet. The sides of the box and the well-fitted overhanging cover are adorned with a covering floral design, depicting an array of branches of plants and flowers, like hibiscus 芙蓉 (fuyô), bell flowers 桔梗 (kikyô), pine tree 松 (matsu), wisteria 藤 (fuji), weeping willow 柳 (yanagi), and many more. Executed in hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer design) and takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer design) in different shades of gold and silver with kirigane 切金 (cut and inlaid pieces of gold leaf) accents. Set on a glossy black lacquer substrate 蝋色漆 (rôiro’urushi). The interior of the cover with a design of a large flock of cranes 鶴 (tsuru) flying through the starry sky, some carrying a pine tree branch in their beaks. The starry sky is created by a dispersed silver nashiji 梨子地 (sprinkled gold lacquer) with a few golden hints. Bordered by a broad golden fundame rim 粉溜地 (matt lacquer) with a soft silver finish. The interior and underside of the box matches the substrate of the cover. Period: Japan – Taishô period (1912-1926). Dimensions: Length 42.4 cm, Width 34.8 cm, Height 17.2 cm. Including a Japanese letter and a large back lacquered tomobako 供箱 (storage box) with protective hardware. The box is in a very good condition with some minor traces of wear conform age.
