The exterior boasts a striking black lacquer ground, adorned with a combination of gold and silver paulownia motifs, while the interior is gracefully embellished with chrysanthemum crests set against a pear skin ground (nashiji). The paulownia design is a symbol of good fortune and an emblem used by the government of Japan, signifying dignity and refinement. The chrysanthemum is the imperial family's emblem, often associated with longevity and rejuvenation. Maki-e, the technique used for these decorations, involves sprinkling gold or silver powder over lacquer while it's still wet, creating a lustrous and intricate pattern. Nashiji resembles the skin of a pear, achieved by sprinkling gold or silver flakes over a layer of lacquer. This confectionery box shows signs of aging and wear, with silver tarnishing, cracks in the lacquer at the interior corners, minor chips on the exterior, and scratches around the edges. The original wooden box has evidence of woodworm, scratches, bottom cracks, and a rich patina. Please refer to the photos for a detailed assessment of the condition. Dimensions: approx.
