Antique, rare and unique Saiva Nobleman stone head, in andesite (volcanic rock), dating between late 19th century-early 20th century, from South India.
As per specialists, this Saiva head with the three stripes on the forehead – tripundra – are a direct referral that this was a person who was a follower of the Hindu God Shiva. The head wears a crown which makes this a sculpture of a nobleman, and the shape and style of the flowers suggest the provenance.
The Tripuṇḍra, three horizontal lines, on the forehead as well as other body parts are symbols during rites of passages, and for some a daily practice. To those who apply it, is a reminder of the spiritual aims of life, the truth that body and material things shall someday become ash, and that mukti is a worthy goal. Tri means three, pundra means one which is released.
