Kaku Yukimi Ishi’dôrô’ 角雪見石灯籠 (linterna que muestra la nieve sobre una base cuadrada) - Granito - Japón - Período Taishō (1912-1926)

A lovely, 5-part carved granite garden lantern, known as a ‘Kaku Yukimi Ishi’dôrô’ 角雪見石灯籠 (snow-showing lantern on square base) with a charming sleek design in a grey hue with dark and light accents. This type is the most well-known traditional Japanese lantern that is relatively close to the ground. ‘Yukimi’ is Japanese for ‘seeing snow’. This name was based on the fact that the ‘Kasa’ 傘 or ‘umbrella’ of the lantern can be covered with snow during the cold winter days. ‘Kaku’ 角 refers to the post, as the four legs together are square in appearance. (Source: Yokoso Japanese Gardens) The individual parts are represent the following: The bottom-most piece, sao 竿 (post) touching the ground, represents chi, the earth 地. The next piece, the chûdai 中台 ('central platform') represents sui 水 (water). Ka 火 (fire), is represented by the section encasing the lantern's light or flame 火袋 (hibukuro). Fû 風 (air) and kû 空 (void or spirit) are represented by the last two sections, top-most and pointing towards the sky. Approx. dimensions: Height 71 cm, Width 81 cm, Depth 72 cm. Weight 154 kg. The age of these lanterns is difficult to determine. We think that this one dates from the Taishô period (1912-1926). It is in a very good condition. Some original wooden frames with glass still present in the openings of the hibukuro. The lower edge of the chûdai with chips (see photos). For a clear condition reference, please look at the photos as well. We will use a wooden pallet and good packing for safe transport. When shipped we will also add a certificate of authenticity.
